Tonga’s Delegation Gathers in Unified Preparations for COP28 in the United Arab Emirates
Tonga’s delegation gathered at the Fa’onelua Convention Centre to prepare for COP28 in the United Arab Emirates. COP, or the Conference of the Parties, is a global event conducted by the United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change where countries come together to discuss and coordinate efforts to address climate change. The Pre COP28 Meeting was hosted by the Ministry of Meteorology, Energy, Information, Disaster Management, Environment, Climate Change (MEIDECC), and led by CEO Mr. Sione ‘Akau’ola. The event aimed to analyze global climate progress since COP27 and strategize for COP28.
During his opening remarks, CEO Mr Sione ‘Akau’ola stated “Every one of us in this room and beyond these walls has a significant role to play in each of your organizations to contribute to Tonga’s resilience.” The event provided a platform for delegates to deliberate on decisions and outcomes from the June SB58 inter-sessional meetings, assess the achievements made since COP27, and consider priority outcomes and strategies crucial for COP28’s success.
Ms Luisa Tuiafitu Malolo, Director of MEIDECC, highlighted the importance of collaboration and shared responsibility in addressing global climate challenges. She stated, “Today’s discussions have set the stage for a united front in tackling climate issues. Tonga stands ready to contribute actively to COP28, working towards sustainable solutions for the benefit of our Kingdom.”
Climate Change consultant Mr. Lano Fonua emphasized the need for integrated measures from all relevant sectors. He stated that “The Pre COP28 Meeting was a great opportunity to build the confidence of stakeholders from different ministries. It’s also important for Tonga because we are a country mostly made up of oceans.”
The event introduced preparatory measures for COP28, including the distribution of supporting documents and the Thematic Areas Registration. Delegates were encouraged to complete the registration and send it as soon as possible, aiding in the meticulous planning for the upcoming conference.
COP28 will be held from 30 November until 12 December in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
