Tonga Strengthens Climate Reporting with MRV Training for AFOLU Sector Using IPCC Software
Date: 26 September 2024
Location: Nuku’alofa, Tonga
On 26th September 2024, the Department of Climate Change (DCC) in Tonga successfully completed an MRV (Measurement, Reporting, and Verification) training for the Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector. The training focused on the use of the updated IPCC software for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reporting. The program was conducted by a consultant from HEAT International and was made possible through the support of the Regional NDC Hub, implemented by GIZ in partnership with HEAT International.
The training aimed to equip participants with practical knowledge of the IPCC software, ensuring they are capable of accurately calculating and reporting GHG emissions in the AFOLU sector. Participants, many of whom are involved in preparing Tonga’s National Greenhouse Gas Inventory, gained hands-on experience with the latest tools and methodologies, enabling them to enhance transparency and accuracy in Tonga’s climate reporting.
This initiative is directly aligned with the goals of Tonga’s Second Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), which highlights the nation’s commitment to reducing GHG emissions and enhancing transparency across key sectors, including AFOLU. The MRV training is a critical step in supporting Tonga’s NDC targets by improving the quality of emissions data and ensuring that the country’s climate actions are effectively tracked and reported.
Facilitated by HEAT International, the training focused on building local expertise in GHG data entry, emissions calculations, and sector-specific analysis using internationally recognized IPCC guidelines. This capacity-building effort strengthens Tonga’s MRV system and supports the country’s commitments to the Paris Agreement.
The training, supported by the Regional NDC Hub, with GIZ as the implementing partner and HEAT International providing technical expertise, highlights the importance of regional and international collaboration in advancing Tonga’s climate transparency efforts.
