Tonga to access funding from the Green Climate Fund (GCF)

02nd March Ms. Coral Pasisi, Green Climate Fund Advisor for the Pacific, in a consultation in Nukualofa, briefed Hon. Siaosi Sovaleni, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for MEIDECC last Friday, on how Tonga can access funding from the GCF through submission of a Readiness concept note and proposal to the GCF Secretariat.

The GCF is a fund within the framework of the UNFCCC founded as a mechanism to assist developing countries in adaptation and mitigation practices to combat climate change. The GCF having to serve as an arm of the Paris Agreement, aim to ensure developing countries can efficiently and effectively access financial resources.

For Tonga and developing country Parties, in particular Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Least Developing Countries (LDCs), the GCF will strengthen coordination and delivery of resources to support country-driven strategies with regards to climate change through;

1.    simplified approval procedures;
2.    enhanced readiness support for SIDS & LDCs.

Tonga is currently trying to further its investments in adaptation and mitigation practices, as its investments in development, now, with the submission of a Readiness concept to the GCF Secretariat in February 2016, and initiating submission of a full Readiness proposal later this month.

The Green Climate Fund will support the work to reduce Tonga’s vulnerability to climate change and increase investment in development, given that we access financial resources from the GCF platform.
