Launching of Niua Fo’ou Water Tanks, ‘Api Niua, Havelu

On the 5th of May, 2022, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for MEIDECC, Hon. Poasi Tei with her Excellency, Tiffany Babington, the New Zealand High Commissioner and the Government Representative for Niua 17, Hon. Vatau Hui commissioned the Niufo’ou Water Supply Project by marking with the installation of a 27,000 L water tank at the Niua Community Hall, Havelu.

The Niuafo’ou Water Supply Project has been co-funded  by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) and The Tindall Foundation to a total of NZ$565,000. This  Project fund a total of 169 water tanks of which 152 of the water tanks have a 13,000L capacity and 17 water tanks with a 27,000L capacity.

This project builds on the work commenced by the Government of Tonga to ensure all households have access to safe drinking water and water for wider household and community use.

“We extend our sincere gratitude to your Excellency, Tiffany and the Government of New Zealand and the Tindall Foundation for your love and generosity to the people of Niuafo’ou and Tonga. May God bless you and your good Government,” the CEO for MEIDECC, Mr. Paula Ma’u said.

“The issue of climate change and water security for Niuafo’ou has been an ongoing challenge for many years,” said Her Excellency, Tiffany Babington.

The Government Representative for Niua 17, Hon. Vatau Hui and the Chairman of Niua’s Shipping Board, Mr. Solomone Vaikeli also acknowledged a very warm appreciation speech thanking the New Zealand Government for their support in funding the project. “Your help to fund these projects are forever in our hearts. For every project being funded by your approval improves our standard of living, project after project.”

We are looking forward to the delivery and installation of the water tanks at the end of May or early June and to witness the positive impact it has on Niuafo’ou households and communities.
