National Climate Change Week Begins in Tongatapu with a Sunday Church Service

After the Sunday Church Service at Sia’atoutai Theological College; National Climate Change Awareness Week 2019

13th August 2019 The National Climate Change Awareness Week 2019 commenced on Sunday 11 August 2019 with a Church service at Siaátoutai Theological College.

Mr. Paula Ma’u CEO for MEIDECC, Director of Climate Change Ms. Luísa Tuíáfitu Malolo, including Mr. Sione Moala CEO for Tourism and his wife Mrs. Lucy Moala Acting CEO for Education, MEIDECC staff, representatives from TNYC, non-government groups, the private sector and District officers were present to mark this important occasion.

The Head Tutor of Siaátoutai Theological College Reverend Siosifa Koloti Ma´u, delivered a powerful sermon urging the congregation that as stewards of the land, to begin this National Climate Change Awareness week by respecting the natural environment and keeping God´s Sabbath holy to protect the Kingdom of Tonga and the people from impacts of Climate Change.

The theme for this year´s National Climate Change Awareness Week is “Increase Climate Action to save Tonga”.  The Department of Climate Change will engage in various activities this week including television and radio awareness programs, a Donor Roundtable and Bilateral meetings.

The National Climate Change Awareness Week will conclude with an Exhibition Day on Friday16 August at the Queen Salote Memorial Hall.  Relevant Line Ministries, NGO and private sector groups will display their works implemented on the ground.

The Department of Climate Change calls for continued support from its key stakeholders and the people to increase climate action to save Tonga.
