Regional Virtual Training on Nationally Determined Contributions

Tonga participated in a three-days virtual training on Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), from the 09th -11th of June 2020. The training was held at the Department of Climate, MEIDECC’s Conference Room and it was hosted by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Secretariat in partnership with the Regional Pacific Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) Hub.

NDCs are at the heart of the Paris Agreement and they are climate actions, which determine whether the world achieves the long-term goals of the Agreement for greenhouse gas emissions and adaptation to the impacts of climate change. Parties to this Agreement are requested to prepare new or updated NDCs and communicate them to the UNFCCC Secretariat by 2020.

The training is part of the UNFCCC’s capacity building support to its Parties and the main objective of this training is to familiarize Pacific countries’ NDC focal points and relevant government officials with the NDC preparation and submission process, as well as to understand the Katowice Guidance on Information to facilitate clarity, transparency and understanding (ICTU) and Adaptation communication in relation to NDCs.

Department of Climate Change at MEIDECC is currently reviewing and enhancing Tonga’s NDC, which will be submitted to the UNFCCC Secretariat later this year.

Attending the training from Tonga were government officials from the Department of Climate Change, Department of Energy, Department of Environment, Ministry of Infrastructure (MOI), Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry (MAFF), Tonga Power Limited (TPL) and Waste Authority Limited (WAL).
