National Workshop for the Validation of the Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) System Design for the Agriculture, Forests, and Other Land Use (AFOLU) Sector of Tonga’s Second NDC
Nuku‘alofa, 14th June 2024 – The Department of Climate Change is excited to announce a crucial national workshop aimed at validating the Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) system designed for the Agriculture, Forests, and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector under Tonga’s Second Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). This significant event is scheduled from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm on Friday, 14th June 2024, at the Department of Climate Change Conference Room, located on Level 3 of the O.G Sanft Building in Nuku‘alofa.
Workshop Objectives:
- Validate the MRV System: Evaluate and confirm the accuracy and effectiveness of the MRV system tailored for the AFOLU sector.
- Conduct Capacity Building: Improve the skills and knowledge of relevant stakeholders on the MRV system, focusing on data collection and management processes and greenhouse gas (GHG) calculation methodologies.
- Provide Recommendations: Offer actionable feedback and suggestions for the continuous refinement and enhancement of the MRV system based on insights gathered during the workshop.
The workshop will gather a diverse group of participants, including representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture Division, Livestock Division, Forestry Division, Tonga Statistics Department (TSD), farmer representatives, NGOs, and private sector stakeholders. This inclusive and collaborative approach is designed to foster a comprehensive understanding and ensure the effective implementation of the MRV system across all sectors.
The MRV system is a vital component of Tonga’s commitment to global climate action as outlined in its Second NDC. By ensuring accurate measurement, reporting, and verification of GHG emissions and removals within the AFOLU sector, Tonga aims to bolster its climate change mitigation efforts and achieve its international climate goals.
