Department of Climate Change holds Awareness Program Wednesday – Friday, 20th - 22nd September encourages Tonga to “Act Now”

The Department of Climate Change within MEIDECC will hold a National Climate Change Awareness Program from 20th – 22nd September 2017. A National theme was adopted for the program: “CLIMATE CHANGE IS HERE. LET US ACT NOW:”

The three-day programme intends to increase awareness of the general public to climate change and its impacts in Tonga.

This climate change awareness program also highlights “one whole year” of Tonga’s ratification of the Paris Agreement on the 21st September 2016 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.  The Paris Agreement brings all nations involved into a common cause to undertake ambitious efforts to combat climate change and adapt to its effects with enhanced support to assist developing countries like Tonga and neighbouring Pacific Island Countries, which are most vulnerable to threats of climate change.

The main activities for the Climate Change Program will commence with tree planting program which involve schools and different target groups from communities including churches, women’s groups, youth groups and disabled. On Friday 22nd September it will be an Exhibition Day at Digicel Square. Department of Climate Change stakeholders have been invited to attend this event.
