Global Climate Change Alliance Plus Initiative (GCCA) Meet with JNAP Taskforce for Scaling Up Adaptation (SUPA)

A meeting was held by representatives of the Global Climate Change Alliance (GCCA) with the Joint National Action Plan (JNAP) technical team to discuss the application and allocation of a €500K grant to Tonga. Entitled the ‘Global Climate Change Alliance Plus (GCCA+) – Scaling Up Pacific Adaptation’ (SUPA); the grant is funded by the European Union at a total of €14.89m for TEN (10) Pacific Nations. In association with Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Programme (SPREP), the Pacific Community (SPC) and the University of the South Pacific (USP); the grant aims to ‘scale up’ resilient development measures in specific sectors. The criteria of the grant require a country to select one sector from Food Security, Water Security, Human health and Coastal Protection. The JNAP technical team were prompt in choosing to address Coastal Protection in Western Tongatapu as the sea wall under construction in the town of Kolovai is currently in need of fund to continuation. The project timeframe is 3.5 years for consultation, design and implementation beginning mid-2019.
