Department of Climate Change holds Bilateral meetings with donors in Partnership following National Climate Change donor round-table

19th October,2018 Bilateral meetings held by the Department of Climate Change as follow up with donor partners following the second installment of its annual Nationa19th October,2018l Climate Change Donor Roundtable.

The Director of the Department of Climate Change, Mrs. Lu’isa Tu’i’afitu – Malolo and senior staff members held several bilateral meetings throughout today discussing topics of interest raised at the open forum of the National Climate Change Donor Roundtable.

Engaging talks also focused on future climate activities to be implemented in Tonga in partnership with donors, with the aspiration of achieving the Climate Change Policy goal of “A resilient Tonga by 2035”.

A recurring topic of interest amongst the discussions stemmed from the Climate Change Trust Fund and its rapid accessibility to community grassroots in comparison to traditional multilateral or bilateral channels, and the implementation phase of the Joint National Action Plan 2018 – 2028 (JNAP 2).

These meetings enabled for a robust discussion around the activities generated by the Department of Climate Change and the trajectory in which it is aiming for through partnership and support from donor partners. It also brought to light the need for all climate action projects being funded by the donor agencies to harmonize with the Department of Climate Change to reduce duplication of projects initiated by the Department.

It is envisioned that further follow up meetings to the Donor Roundtable discussions, will be convened for early next year. Those able to attend were New Zealand High Commissioner to Tonga H.E Tiffany Babington along with her team of Ms. ‘Olivia Fukofuka and Mr. Owen Pau’u, Australia’s Deputy High Commissioner to Tonga, Ms. Rhona McPhee. Also included in bilateral talks were Mr. Viliame Kasanawaqa of the Pacific Islands Development Forum Secretariat (PIDF), and Mr. Ulaiasi Butukoro of Global Green Growth Institute
