Major Environmental Impact Assessment: Vaini 1MW Solar Farm

In accordance with Tongan Government Regulations, this Environmental Impact Assessment aims to give a detailed description of the likely social, economic, cultural and environmental impacts of implementing a 1MW Solar Farm at Vaini, Tongatapu. Research discussed in the report finds that the proposed development is expected to generate 1308 MWh of electricity annually; around 2.5% of Tongatapu’s electricity demand; offsetting approximately 327,000 litres of diesel, 886 tonnes of CO₂ and US$ 807,000 (diesel costs alone) annually. The report identifies the importance of Tonga becoming more reliant on renewable power generation, and that the benefits of implementing the proposed development vastly outweigh the detrimental impacts. The report also identifies that the proposed development is in accordance with the Renewable Energy Act 2008.
