Hon. Dr Taniela Likuohihifo Fusimalohi Appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Meteorology, Energy, Information, Disaster Management, Environment, Climate Change and Communications (MEIDECC) and Minister for Infrastructure (MOI)

Nukuʻalofa, Tonga — January 29, 2025 — The Government of Tonga proudly announces the appointment of Hon. Dr. Taniela Likuohihifo Fusimalohi as Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Infrastructure, and Minister for Meteorology, Energy, Information, Disaster Management, Environment, Climate Change, and Communications (MEIDECC), effective January 28, 2025.
Dr. Fusimalohi’s appointment recognizes his exceptional leadership, extensive public service record, and his unwavering commitment to national development and climate resilience.
A highly accomplished academic, Dr. Fusimalohi holds:
- Bachelor of Business in Public Administration – University of South Australia
- Bachelor of Laws – University of the South Pacific, Fiji
- Postgraduate Diploma in Economic & Social Studies – University of Manchester, UK
- Master of Arts in Public Sector Management – Flinders University, Australia
- PhD in Public Administration – University of Queensland, Australia
Dr. Fusimalohi has served Tonga with distinction for over three decades. His notable career includes roles as:
- Principal Assistant Secretary, Prime Minister’s Office (1987–2000)
- Deputy Director, Ministry of Tourism (2000–2006)
- Chief Executive Officer, Ministry of Internal Affairs (2007–2011)
- Elected Member of Parliament for ‘Eua 11 (since 2021)
Throughout his tenure, he has played a leading role in parliamentary committees on legislation, environment, foreign affairs, and climate change. His policy expertise and advocacy have significantly advanced Tonga’s efforts in infrastructure development, disaster resilience, and environmental protection.
As Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for both MEIDECC and Infrastructure, Dr. Fusimalohi is now at the forefront of Tonga’s strategic planning for sustainable development, digital transformation, and climate action.
